Signs Your Furnace System Needs an Upgrade

Your furnace has a limited life. Even if your home has reliably used the same system for decades, it is likely not working the same as a new one — you could benefit from an upgrade to a more efficient system. While you can repair your system if it has problems, you may save more money in the long run with a new one. Here is more information about the signs your furnace system needs an upgrade.
What Are the Signs One Needs an Upgrade?
Even if your system works smoothly, you may want to consider an upgrade to take advantage of newer technology. Older systems can become a burden even if they don't break down. Below are some signs your furnace needs replacement.
Frequent Breakdowns
If you find your furnace needs more and more maintenance and frequent expensive (major) repairs, an upgrade may be more cost-efficient. If your furnace is very old, you may even have problems finding the right parts for it.
Higher Bills
As systems age, they become less efficient and use more energy to produce the same amount of heat. Even if your furnace works perfectly, your bills will go up as the system gets older.
Uneven Heat
Often, an older system will not heat the home as evenly as before. In addition to the loss of efficiency in your air ducts, heating units may leak or exhibit other problems. An older system may have multiple problems at once that can cause an uneven flow of air and heat.
Increased Dust
Your older system may not only not heat as well, but it also won't keep the dust down as it did before. You will find more dust accumulation than usual. However, increased dust could signal a clogged filter, so check that first.
Strange Smells and Noises
A strange smell isn't unusual when you first turn on your furnace. However, if it continues over a long period of time, you may have a serious issue. All furnaces make noise, but they shouldn't rattle or squeal even when you first start everything up.
Bad Flame Color
Your furnace's flame should be a steady blue. A yellow or orange flame indicates a carbon monoxide output that could put you at risk. Your unit could have a crack or other damaged internal part. Sometimes, these issues are non-repairable and require a furnace replacement. So, you may want to get an upgrade anyway.
